Why we exist

Africa has made tremendous strides in various socio-economic and political fronts. In spite of these achievements, the continent still falls short in a few core areas of Human dignity and social justice. Among them is gender injustice. Injustice against women has often resulted in the outright abuse and restrain of the rights of women. In the name of religion, tradition and culture, social and religious groups in Africa systematically suppress women to multiple forms of oppressions. Manifestations of gender discrimination including the male-controlled form of keeping women in inferior positions, the barbaric custom of denying female children a right to parent’s inheritance, sexual harassment, and the economic structure that systematically discriminates against women. The cases of gender based violence, rapes and torture of women, clearly indicating various forms of prejudice against women at different levels in both urban and rural setting are extremely disturbing to core human conscience. This amongst others is the reason why Women Rights Network exists.

WRN is keen to contribute its quota in promoting women’s rights and women empowerment through a variety of strategies and development platforms to promote the rebirth-woman reform agenda in addition to condemning the social-economic bias against women. We are
especially focused on the welfare, rehabilitation and re-integration of women who were victims of domestic and other forms of gender based violence.
